Designed by an award-winning, internationally recognized landscape architect, Doug Hoerr of Chicago, the new garden features an elaborate, symmetrical design with two fountains, stone architectural elements, two long pergolas, and a variety of planting beds. The design is inspired by the romance of English country estates while complementing the character of the historic Paine property.
Aaron Sherer, Executive Director of the Paine, says, “The garden is a living artwork in which people can marvel at the wonder of nature in concert with the ingenuity of humankind.” Similar to the Paine mansion’s main gallery, which features changing art exhibitions, the new formal garden is now a major outdoor “gallery” that will feature spectacular changing seasonal displays of plants. As a four season garden, the space will present a spectacular bulb display in the spring, a major annual display in the summer, a frost-hardy display in the fall, and dramatic lighting in winter.

During the summer of 2017, the Paine constructed a new elaborate formal garden. The garden is located along the Paine property’s eastern border adjacent to the new conservatory-style building, which was constructed in 2012.
