Tibetan Portrait: The Power of Compassion

For the past twenty-five years, social documentary filmmaker and photographer Phil Borges has lived with and documented indigenous and tribal cultures around the world to better understand the challenges they face. Beginning in 1994, Borges traveled to Tibet, northern India, and Nepal to interview and photograph Tibetans and Tibetan refugees to explore what has happened to them and their culture since China’s invasion of the independent, Buddhist nation in 1950.
His journey culminated in the photographic series and book Tibetan Portrait: The Power of Compassion, which sheds light on individuals from a deeply spiritual culture who have been marginalized and displaced by the occupation of their homeland.
Featuring a selection of photographs and narratives from Tibetan Portrait, this exhibition in the Paine’s Main Gallery shares the compelling stories of Tibetan individuals—from nomads of the remote Himalayas to the Dalai Lama himself—each committed to upholding their unique culture and to the practice of compassion in the face of oppression.
The exhibition is accompanied by photographs from Phil Borges’s Tibet: Culture on the Edge series, on view in the Paine’s Salon Gallery.
